Community Education Programs
Heart Safe Richland
Heart Safe Richland is a Richland Fire & Emergency Services (RF&ES) initiative offering free Hands-Only CPR training and AED education to the public as an effort to reduce the number of cardiac arrest related deaths within the City of Richland and greater Tri-City area.
Additionally, as a part of the Heart Safe Richland initiative, RF&ES launched the Save Station - Community AED Program. In 2021, the first publicly accessible Automated External Defibrillator (AED) became accessible to the community for emergency use. Since then, three more have been added for a total of four public Save Stations within the City of Richland.
Community AED locations include:
- Howard Amon Park near Lee Blvd.,
- Columbia Point Marina Park Boat Launch,
- Two at Badger Mountain; one at the Trailhead and one at the summit
Community Outreach
Smoke Alarm Help
RF&ES has partnered with the American Red Cross - Sound the Alarm campaign. Through this program, RF&ES staff will replace smoke alarm batteries and/or install free smoke alarms for families in need of them. Please fill out the Residential Smoke Alarm Assistance Request form, or call RF&ES Administrative Office with any questions at 509-942-7703.
Fired Up to Read
RF&ES works with five elementary schools in the Richland School District, providing opportunities for firefighters to volunteer to mentor and read with at-risk children.
Kadlec PICU Visits
Off-duty firefighters visit children in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Kadlec Regional Medical Center on a monthly basis and hand out toys and books. This program was discontinued due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but we hope to launch again soon!
Ways to Stay Informed
CodeRed
CodeRed is a community notification application that uses phone, text, and email to provide notification of emergency situations or critical community alerts. Examples include evacuation notices, bio-terrorism alerts, boil water notices, and missing child reports.
PulsePoint
PulsePoint is a free cell phone application designed to alert those trained in CPR of a cardiac event occuring nearby, also providing the nearest AED location. PulsePoint aims to save lives and improve patient outcomes by reducing the amount of time between starting CPR and using a defibrillator.
